Today we're supposed to wear purple in support of the LGBYT community. But, more specifically to as a reminder of those kids who made the news because they killed themselves over bullying in September. And, while these cases were specifically terrible, this is a daily thing. Sure, not everyone goes out and kills themselves, but thousands of people have to deal with the ridicule everyday.
I for one cannot believe that we are still at a point in our nation where being gay would be a problem. Of all the problems that we could focus on, this is the one people choose to make a huge fuss about? It should be a non issue. People are gay. Lets learn to deal with it.
I can only imagine what would happen if we stopped labeling gays in certain ways, and allowed them to shed the stigmas that we've so easily placed on their shoulders. If we stopped assuming they are all deviants who are unable to keep their pants on, who can't maintain a monogamous relationship, who are pedophiles, that gay is something that is spread socially.
What if we taught our kids that it's not abnormal. What if we taught our kids to be comfortable in their own skin, and allow others the same freedom. What if we recognized that in our society people are gay. What if we had to restructure some things because we realize this is true, would that be so bad? What if we no longer let the government make the decision on what a family should look like? What if gays no longer lived in fear of people finding out, and being teased, loosing their job, friends, family?
I just can't wait for the day when we treat people as people. Not as 'fags' or 'queers', just beautifully created people. So, I'll wear my purple today, and I hope you do too.
